Sapele— The people of Ovwore community, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, yesterday, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to pay compensation to them over their houses marked for demolition in the proposed Sapele/Agbor road dualization or they will block the East West Road and cause mayhem at the Amukpe roundabout portion of the road.

Speaking through their representative, Mr Sunday Asini, they said: “The Federal Government has marked our houses for demolition any moment from now over road dualization from Sapele (Amukpe roundabout) to Agbor, yet it has not paid compensation to us.

“If it fails within 14 days to pay us the compensation, we shall engage in a massive protest on the East West road and we shall block it and deprive vehicular movement.”

They gave the ultimatum at a meeting of stakeholders from the seven villages that make up Ovwore axis of the council area.

According to them, “after valuation is done in situations like these, compensations are promptly paid to the people to enable them relocate before the demolition is done. However, in this case the Federal Government is poised to demolish our homes very soon and make us homeless without alternative place to go.

“Again, while we were waiting for the compensation to be paid after the construction company had completed valuation, a new development came that the valuation has been reduced by 30 per cent just as anybody whose property is affected but without certificate of occupancy, will not be entitled to any compensation. We also disagree with the FG on these.”
