PORT HARCOURT—GOVERNOR Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, yesterday, said the reported killing of an operative of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, during a foiled kidnap operation on Monday at Oroazi area of the state had vindicated him.

Wike, who spoke to newsmen in Government House, Port Harcourt, recalled that on assumption of office in 2015 he wrote to the Inspector General of Police, alleging that a top officer of the SARS was behind some major crimes in the state, but that he was ignored.

He alleged that one of SARS officers allegedly caught in a video trying to manipulate the last year’s re-run elections in the state was one of those killed on the side of the kidnappers, during a fierce gun battle with men from the Inspector General’s special team contacted minutes after the kidnap.

Waving a photograph of the man shot dead before newsmen, the governor said the development had vindicated his earlier claim that SARS was behind crime in the state.

He said he would not be surprised if the Police came up with a twisted account of the incident.

His words: “If you believe in God and worship Him in truth, He will always answer your prayers. Sometimes it may seem delayed.”

At press time, the Police could not be reached for comment, as Rivers State Police spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, rejected calls to his mobile.

Also, a text message sent to him for comment on the issue had not been responded to at press time.
