Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, yesterday, said he smelt a rat in the current strike by workers in the state and thinks that it might be a ploy to frustrate the ongoing salary verification scheme.
He spoke when the Local Organising Committee of the 2017 International Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors paid him a courtesy call at the Benue Peoples House in Makurdi.Gov. Samuel Ortom
Governor Ortom said he was surprised that labour leaders, who were involved in the disbursement of the resources that accrued to the state every month and had hitherto shown understanding, suddenly act as if money had been kept aside somewhere.
He said after reflection, he realised that the strike might have been instigated by the same syndicate that was benefitting from the over-bloated salary bill of the state and had encouraged the strike as a strategy to frustrate the verification exercise.
The governor also expressed willingness to host Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, who shall pay a pre-convention sensitisation visit to the state next week, describing the playwright as a man who has developed his God-given talent to the fullest and has mentored many people across the world.
Chairman of the organising committee, Professor Idris Amali, had stated that the committee came to express apprecia-tion to the governor for supporting its activities.
